The spend cap, usage prices above the included amounts, how overages are measured and billed from prepaid credit, and the monthly spending cap.
#Spend cap
Paid plans start with the spend cap on: usage stops at your plan's included amounts and you never pay more than the plan price. Turn it off in Billing to keep going above the included amounts; the dialog shows the rates and what your current usage would cost this month before you confirm. Enterprise starts with the spend cap off. Free always has hard limits.

The included amounts of every plan are on Pricing. Files are stored in EU object storage.
#How usage is measured
- Database size is per project and file storage is for the whole account; both are billed in GB-months: each day over the included size adds (GB over ÷ days in the month). A project 2 GB over its database size for half a month pays for 1 GB; for files, the total of all your projects is compared with your plan's amount.
- Extra projects are billed per day the same way: one extra project for 10 days of a 30-day month costs a third of the monthly price.
- Extra projects need prepaid credit. Creating one needs credit for its first 7 days. If the credit runs out, the monthly spending limit is reached or the spend cap is turned back on, you get an e-mail and 3 days to fix it; then the newest extra projects are paused until only your plan's included projects run. Paused projects keep all their data, are not billed, and start again automatically once your credit covers them.
- Egress, invocations and realtime messages are the month's totals across your account.
- Monthly active users and realtime connections are the month's peak across your account.
- Months are calendar months in UTC.
#How it is billed
Usage above the included amounts is charged from your prepaid credit as it happens (every hour), in steps of at least one cent. Two limits always apply: your credit balance and your monthly spending cap (default $20 a month). When either is reached, the plan's limits apply again until you add credit or the month ends, so there is never debt. With automatic top-up on, credit is added before it runs out. On the 1st, last month is closed with an itemised invoice.
#Estimates
Before any action that changes your bill, the dashboard shows its cost: monthly change, the prorated amount for the rest of this month, and whether your credit covers it. The same calculation produces your charges and the pricing calculator, so estimates and invoices match. With the Management API, call POST /platform/v1/billing/estimate with a change such as {"type":"project"}, {"type":"plan","plan_id":"scale"} or {"type":"spend_cap","on":false}.
