Free projects are never paused while you use your account. Only projects of accounts abandoned for a year are paused, after two e-mail warnings.
Free projects stay online. When a project gets no requests, its API services stop after a while and start again on the next request (about a second); the database stays online the whole time and nothing is paused or deleted.
The only exception is an abandoned account: nobody has signed in to it and none of its projects has been used for a year. Its Free projects are then paused, after two e-mails, so that unused databases don't sit on our servers forever.

Pro and Scale projects are never paused.
#What counts as use
- Signing in to your StitchDB account.
- Requests to any of your projects' API (REST, Auth, Storage, Realtime, Edge Functions).
- Queries over database connections, pooled or session mode.
- Opening a project in the dashboard.
Any of these on any of your projects keeps every project of the account online.
#Timeline for an abandoned account
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 30 days before the pause | An e-mail with the pause date. Signing in or using any project cancels it. |
| 7 days before the pause | A reminder e-mail. |
| A year without use (and at least 7 days after the reminder) | The project is paused and you get an e-mail with a Restore project button and the deletion date. |
| 3 days and 1 day before deletion | Reminder e-mails. |
| 30 days after pausing | The project is deleted permanently: its database, users, files, keys and settings. You get a last e-mail. |
#While paused
- API requests get
503with codeproject_paused. - Database connections are refused and Studio is unavailable.
- Your data is kept until the deletion date.
#Restore
Open the project in the dashboard and click Restore project, or use the button in the e-mail. Restoring takes about a minute.
