Render Postgres Alternatives (Free Tier That Doesn't Expire)

The most common reason to look for a Render Postgres alternative is the free tier: Render's free database expires 30 days after you create it. Alternatives with a free Postgres that doesn't expire include StitchDB, Neon and Supabase. For paid workloads, DigitalOcean, Neon, StitchDB and AWS RDS compete with Render's Basic and Pro instances on price, backups and connection limits.

Render is a strong platform for web services, and its Postgres is a sensible default when your app runs there. This guide shows what Render Postgres includes as of November 2026 and where each alternative is better or worse.

#Render Postgres at a glance

From Render's pricing page and free instance docs, as of November 2026:

InstancePriceRAMConnections
Free$0, 30-day limit256 MB100
Basic-256mb$6/mo256 MB100
Basic-1gb$19/mo1 GB100
Basic-4gb$75/mo4 GB100
Pro-4gb$55/mo4 GB100
Pro-8gb$100/mo8 GB200

Storage is billed separately at $0.30 per GB per month. Point-in-time recovery covers the past 3 days on the Hobby workspace and 7 days on higher workspace plans. Read replicas and high availability are available on larger instances. Workspace plans are Hobby ($0), Pro ($25 a month) and Scale ($499 a month), plus compute.

The Free database:

  • expires 30 days after creation, then you have 14 days to upgrade before it is deleted,
  • has a fixed 1 GB of storage,
  • is limited to one per workspace,
  • has no backups and no recovery.

#The three limits that push people elsewhere

1. Expiry. A prototype that turns into something real hits day 30 at the worst moment. You upgrade or lose the data.

2. Storage as a separate line. $0.30 per GB is fair, but a 20 GB database adds $6 a month on top of the instance price, and you size storage yourself.

3. Recovery depends on your workspace plan. Hobby workspaces get 3 days of PITR. If you want 7, you move the whole workspace to Pro.

#StitchDB

Free projects stay online while you use your account; only accounts with no sign-ins and no project use for a full year are paused, after two warning e-mails (inactive projects). Free includes 500 MB of database, 1 GB of files and 24 hours of point-in-time recovery. Pro at $15.99 includes 10 GB of database, daily backups and 7 days of PITR, so storage isn't a separate line until you pass the included amount.

You also get Auth, a REST API generated from your schema, Realtime, Storage and Edge Functions in the same project. If your Render web service only exists to put an API in front of Postgres, you may not need it:

JavaScript
import { createClient } from 'stitchdb-js'

const stitchdb = createClient('https://<project-ref>.p.stitchdb.com', '<anon-key>')

// Row Level Security decides which rows this user can see
const { data, error } = await stitchdb
  .from('orders')
  .select('id, total, created_at, items(name, qty)')
  .order('created_at', { ascending: false })
  .limit(20)

Trade-offs: regions are EU only (Germany and Finland). Render's regions are Oregon, Ohio, Virginia, Frankfurt and Singapore, so for an app in a US Render region the network distance to StitchDB adds latency to every query. On Free, the Auth and REST services sleep after 60 minutes idle and wake within a few seconds, though the database itself stays up.

#Neon

A free tier that doesn't expire, with 100 CU-hours per project per month and 1 GB of storage per project. Compute suspends after 5 minutes idle and resumes on the next query. Good for staging databases and low-traffic apps. Paid usage is billed per CU-hour, which can be cheaper or more expensive than a fixed instance depending on load.

#Supabase

Free projects don't expire, but they are paused after a week without activity, and you restore them from the dashboard. Pro starts at $25 a month with 8 GB of disk.

#DigitalOcean Managed PostgreSQL

No free tier, but a simple $15.15 a month for 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU and 10 GiB of storage, with 7 days of PITR included. It has regions in North America, Europe and Asia. Connection limits are low on small nodes (22 on 1 GiB), so use its PgBouncer pools.

#AWS RDS

Most configurable, most pieces. New accounts get a free plan with credits for up to six months on db.t3.micro or db.t4g.micro. After that you pay per instance-hour, per GB of storage and for data transfer.

#Decision checklist

Ask these in order:

  1. Do your app servers stay on Render? If yes, latency favors a database in the same region. Render's own Postgres or a provider with a region next to it is simplest. For a Render app in Frankfurt, an EU database such as StitchDB is a short hop.
  2. Is the database idle most of the time? Neon's scale to zero saves money.
  3. Do you need auth, file storage or realtime too? StitchDB or Supabase replace several services at once.
  4. Is EU data location a requirement? StitchDB runs only in the EU. See GDPR-friendly database hosting.
  5. Do you need replicas and HA now? Render's larger instances, DigitalOcean standby nodes, RDS Multi-AZ, or PlanetScale's HA clusters.

#Migrating off Render Postgres

Render gives you an external connection string. Dump and restore:

Terminal
pg_dump "$RENDER_EXTERNAL_DATABASE_URL" -Fc --no-owner --no-privileges -f render.dump
pg_restore --no-owner --no-privileges \
  -d "postgresql://p_<ref>_owner:<password>@<db-host>:5432/p_<ref>?sslmode=require" render.dump

For bigger databases, StitchDB's Import from Postgres can copy directly from the connection string and keep the copy in sync until you switch, if the source supports logical replication. Remember that a free Render database has no backups: take your own dump before day 30.

#What "included" means on each plan

When comparing, write down what a month actually costs for your size. A 10 GB database on Render is an instance price plus $3 of storage. On StitchDB Pro, 10 GB of database is included in $15.99, along with daily backups and 7 days of point-in-time recovery; above that, with the spend cap off, extra database size is $0.12 per GB-month (plans and limits). On Neon, the same 10 GB is $3.50 a month of storage plus compute hours. None of these is always cheapest; the right answer depends on your size and how busy the database is.

#FAQ

#Does Render's free Postgres really expire?

Yes. Render's docs say free databases expire 30 days after creation. You get a 14-day grace period to upgrade, then the database and its data are deleted.

#Which free Postgres hosting doesn't expire?

StitchDB, Neon and Supabase all offer free Postgres without a 30-day limit, each with different idle rules. Our free Postgres hosting guide compares them.

#Is Render Postgres storage included in the instance price?

No. As of November 2026 Render bills Postgres storage separately at $0.30 per GB per month.

#Can I keep my web service on Render and use another database?

Yes. Set the connection string as an environment variable, require TLS, and pick a database region near your Render region.
